Description
Description
Violet-green leaves that turn violet-blue after the first frost. A mid to late season variety. Highly frost resistant, 80-120 cm (32-48") tall. Space plants 60-80 cm (24-32") apart. When to Sow: May to June. Where to Sow: Sow seeds thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1.5cm (1/2") deep in short rows. Alternatively sow the seeds thinly in seed trays or two seeds per cell in modules under glass at 13°C. What to do Next: Outdoor sowings should be thinned out to 7-10cm (3-4in) apart, then once plants are large enough, lifted and transplanted to their final planting positions 60cm (24in) apart and 60cm (24in) between the rows to grow on to maturity. As soon as glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick off into trays 5cm (2") apart or thin modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden off before planting out when about 15cm (6") tall to the same spacings as detailed above. Harvest: November to February. Handy Tip: Scarlet is a taller variety growing 80-120cm (32-48") tall so may require staking in exposed windy areas. Nutritional Values: A very good source of Vitamins A, C, K, and B6, along with Calcium, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.
