Description

Many young people today have never seen a pea-pod and only recognise peas if they come out of a plastic bag! We think this is a sad state of affairs because when grown fresh, peas are a totally different vegetable to those that are frozen. To get the sweetest flavour, peas are best cooked when picked young and cooked within 30 minutes of harvest, before the sugar has turned to starch. Carouby de Maussane is a tall growing, mangetout variety with attractive purple flowers, which produces large pods of up to 11cm long. The peas themselves contain a good sweet flavour and the plant will grow to a rather tall height of 150cm.,Seed Count: 250,WHEN TO SOW Late March to May WHERE TO SOW Spread seed evenly in a flat bottom drill 5cm (2"") deep and 10cm (4"") wide. Space rows 45cm (15"") apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin out seedlings as they grow if necessary and transplant the extra plants to another row. MATURITY July to August HANDY TIP Use netting to protect the area after sowing and gradually raise up the nets as plants grow to give support. NUTRITIONAL VALUE A good source of Pro-Vitamin A and Vitamins C, B 1 and folic acid.
